Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 begins across the country

The annual national cleanliness campaign opened under the theme Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat, running to Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2 October. Its five stated pillars cover cleanliness of public places, youth participation through schools and colleges, the safety and dignity of sanitation workers, public participation, and the link between cleanliness and livelihoods. Marked dates include World Tourism Day on 27 September, focused on tourist and pilgrimage sites and public toilets, and a nationwide voluntary cleanliness drive on 1 October.

Swachh Seva Aankalan launched for rural sanitation

C. R. Patil launched Swachh Seva Aankalan at a virtual meeting with States and Union Territories, attended by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri V. Somanna, together with State ministers in charge of rural sanitation and the Mission Directors of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen). The framework is an annual Gram Panchayat-level digital self-assessment of rural sanitation service delivery, involving Gram Panchayats, Gram Sabhas, Village Water and Sanitation Committees, and district and State officials.

Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain launched

The national water conservation campaign was relaunched in merged form, bringing together the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari initiative and the Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain campaign into a single annual campaign, with emphasis on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, water storage and community participation ahead of the monsoon.

₹1,561.53 crore released to five States under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

Funds were released for 2025–26 to Uttar Pradesh (₹792.93 crore), Chhattisgarh (₹536.53 crore), Madhya Pradesh (₹154.02 crore), Odisha (₹65.31 crore) and Maharashtra (₹12.74 crore), following the fulfilment of compliance conditions: a signed reform-linked memorandum of understanding, scheme validation against the Sujalam Bharat asset registry, certified compliance with CPHEEO design norms, and reconciled expenditure. Twelve States had signed memoranda under the restructured mission at that date.

Namami Gange status placed before the Rajya Sabha

A reply to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question 3437 set out the programme position: ₹21,340 crore disbursed since June 2014, 355 of 524 sanctioned projects completed as at February 2026, 3,200 MLD of sewerage treatment capacity completed over five years, 33,024 hectares afforested, and the results of dolphin, gharial and turtle conservation work, together with CPCB water quality data comparing 2018 and 2025.

Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 Operational Guidelines e-released at Jal Mahotsav

The Union Minister released the operational guidelines for the restructured mission at the culmination of Jal Mahotsav 2026, the national tier of the three-tier Jal Utsav campaign, twelve days after the Union Cabinet approved the restructuring on 10 March 2026.

Meeting with State ministers on the Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 roadmap

C. R. Patil chaired a meeting with ministers in charge of Public Health Engineering, Rural Water Supply and Panchayati Raj departments from States and Union Territories to discuss the implementation roadmap for the restructured mission. He urged timely completion of schemes and stronger on-ground monitoring, and emphasised that because water is a State subject, the mission's success depends on the accountability of State governments.

Rural sanitation figures tabled in the Lok Sabha

A reply to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question 2076 set out the status of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II with a full State and UT-wise annexure as at 10 February 2026: 4,96,180 of 5,86,944 villages declared ODF Plus (Model), 5,29,231 villages with solid waste management arrangements and 5,46,487 with liquid waste management arrangements.

Twenty-five JALAJ livelihood centres inaugurated in New Delhi

At an interaction with WaSH Warriors, community representatives and school students, the Minister inaugurated 25 JALAJ Livelihood Centres — a joint initiative of the Namami Gange Mission and the Wildlife Institute of India linking river conservation to livelihoods in the Ganga basin, with a stated focus on women's participation — and launched the Youth for Ganga — Youth for Yamuna outreach project. Both Ministers of State attended, with the Secretary of the Department of Water Resources and the Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga.

Groundwater assessment for 2025 placed before the Lok Sabha

In a written reply to Lok Sabha Starred Question 4, the Union Minister of Jal Shakti set out the Central Ground Water Board's assessment for 2025: annual recharge of 448.52 BCM, extractable resources of 407.75 BCM, extraction of 247.22 BCM, and a national stage of extraction of 60.63 per cent, with 73.14 per cent of assessment units classified safe and 10.8 per cent over-exploited.

India's first Dolphin Rescue Ambulance inaugurated at Dehradun

The Minister inaugurated India's first Dolphin Rescue Ambulance at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, enabling the safe rescue and translocation of Gangetic dolphins. Eight Gangetic dolphins have since been rescued and released.
